DIY Reading Nook

Hello!

Today I'm sharing a project that we have been working on since we moved in April. In the girls' bedroom there is a high built-in cabinet that was used specifically for a TV and gaming system. I knew we weren't going to use it for that purpose and we don't want a TV in the children's bedroom. The cabinet is too high and too deep to reach for bookshelves or practical storage so I decided to turn it into a cozy reading nook. Erica loves to read and is always searching out a quiet spot away from her siblings to be in peace.

Over the past months we spent a little free time here and there transforming the gaming cabinet into a spiffy reading spot. First, I managed to unscrew the doors off the cabinet (which took a week to do as hubby was away on a trip and I couldn't figure how to get the silly bit into the silly screw gun, but he coached me over the phone and I eventually got it). Then I removed the shelving units (more screws, oy!).

A month or so later I climbed up in the cabinet and vacuumed it out. Then Peter removed the last of the hardware from the shelves and removed the bundle of wires for the gaming consoles. From here on, Peter took the lead of this project. He told me one day, "Hun, I've been doing so many projects of my own since we moved. Now it's time for me to complete one our your projects." Needless to say I was thrilled and touched. Peter took the girls to Home Depot to pick out a paint color. They chose Girls Only purple. My amazing hubby also put a wood floor on the bottom of the cabinet and nice trim!

Mmm... He's all mine! Peter installed a reading light at the the top of the nook. We then went to our local thrift store and found a like-new cushion and pillow and a book holder.

Next Peter painted the book holder and built steps out of 2x4s. After a bunch of sanding, he painted them and attached them to the walls.

I found a pretty rose vine at Hobby Lobby and added that above the frame of the nook. That's pretty much it for now! I'd like to add a painting of a girl reading to add to the coziness of the reading nook so I'll keep my eyes open for the right piece of art.

I love the look of it! I'm not a fan of purple, but Peter did an awesome job. I must say, that while this isn't what I had planned for the reading nook, Peter blew me away with his perspective.
