Back From The Land of Green Gables

Last week was a whirlwind, but now that we are settling back into outine I can finall catch my breath (sort of).
Last Sunday Peter and I dropped the girls off at my parents house and headed to Prince Edward Island, Canada for a business trip. The Sunday drive was spent talking (amazing... COMMUNICATION!), listening to our audiobook Catching Fire, and planning the next few days of travel.  We stopped just across the boarder from Maine in Canada for an overnight break. Monday morning we  headed a few more hours through Canada and stopped off at the shore boardering PEI  to stretch our legs and smell the lovely wild roses. Once we crossed the longest bridge I've ever been on, it was only another hour to our hotel in Charlottetown. We were so tired from looking at so much road that we napped immediately and then freshened up to pick up Peters coworker at the airport and headed to dinner. We slept great that night and enjoyed breakfast together before Peter headed to a busy day of meetings with customers. I spent the day doing absolutely nothing and enjoyed every minute of it. I practiced my drawing skills, read a chapter from each book I have been behind on, enjoyed prayer time, napped, watched a TV show, and took my time doing my makeup and hair because I could. We ate dinner together at a lovely seaside restaurant. Wednesday we drove out to Cavendish to visit Avonlea Village and the Green Gables house. Avonlea. Village was lively with entertainment based on a day in Anne Shirley's life. Characters from the Anne of Green Gables books would walk around on their way to school where we could attend a class and witness Anne breaking a slate over Gilbert's head, head over to Mrs. Lynd's house for domestic lessons in whool dying, clap along to music as the villagers held a square dance, or sit in Marilla's parlor and sip raspberry cordial while Dianna accidentally becomes intoxicated with currant wine. We weren't able to stay for all the events due to heat and my swollen feet, but we loved every minute of it. After paying admission for the Village, we thought the fare to tour the Green Gables House was exorbitant and just took pictures from afar. We headed back to Charlottetown and ate Cow's Creamery ice cream for dinner and took their factory tour. Their samples were yummy! We walked around town a bit and enjoyed the fresh air then headed to an Italian restaurant in a jail... It was actually pretty tasty, though the islanders like everything spicy, including meatballs and sauce, wow!
We returned to the hotel and packed up so we could head out bright and early. Thursday morning we ate breakfast and were on the road by 7:45am. Due to our great timing even with plenty of rest and stretching stops, we drove another two hours past our reserved hotel in Bangor, ME. It worked out in our favor, because our last minute reservations in another hotel landed us a generous, lovely room with a whirlpool tub. I was exhausted from the drive so Peter brought dinner to the room and he caught up on work while I watched a Audrey Hepbourn classic and took a rlaxing bubble bath. I enjoyed every moment as I realized it will be a long time before I can enjoy daily showers and bubble baths again!
Friday morning we were excited to see the girls so we ate and were on the road by 7:30 am.  We arrived at my parents to pick up the girls at 10:45am, stopped for lunch and a bit of shopping, and were home by 2pm for naps.
Child free and ready for our adventure!

The boarder of Canada! My first time changing time zones!

We enjoyed having free breakfast that we didn't have to cook every morning.

Me looking out over the red shores of Prince Edward Island and taking in all the delicious air perfumed with wild roses and ocean.

A dinner date.

View from our hotel in Saint John's.

Lighthouse decor in Victoria.

Taking our time to stop and smell the roses!

Peter is an avid Anne fan.

My own Gilbert.

Playing dress-up.

Green Gables at a distance.

Meeting Anne and Dianna in Avonlea Village.

I wanted to take home cases of cordial! Yum!

We took a stroll along the shore in Victoria.

Ice cream for dinner. We live on the wild side ;)

On the drive back we stopped at rest stop for a stretch and while I was in the rest room, Peter bought this ring from the gift shop that I admired and proposed to me! He made everyone's day, especially mine.

We highly recommend vacationing in Prince Edward Island. It is a great place for children too, it's just a long drive!
