An earring, an ambulance, and an award

Sooo Sunday was Father's Day.
The weather was gorgeous (besides a few drizzles)
and hubby and friends went boating and fishing after Mass.
I figured it would just be a relaxing, lazy Sunday for me
and the girls at home (and my sistah, Celia, who was visiting).
Lunchtime came and went and at 1pm I put Sunny down for her nap.

NOT 15 MINUTES LATER
I was in the commode (a rare and wonderful occasion for any mama I'm sure)
and I could hear coughing and sputtering coming from the baby monitor.
It wasn't her tantrum cough, or a sickness cough,
but that "OH CRAP!" cough.

Being that I was *ahem* preoccupied,
I called Celia to run upstairs and help Sunny because
she was CHOKING!
I got myself out of the potty and Celia is called me
to hurry upstairs because,
"SHE SWALLOWED HER EARRING!!!"

Sunny was coming down the stairs,
beet red with tears down her face.
She was still coughing , but I could see that
she was ok, just very upset.
"Earring stuck in there!"
She kept pointing to her throat.
I KNEW she swallowed it.

I brought her to the couch and told her to sit still
(I'm thinking internal punctures...those earring posts are sharp!).
I called the hospital and asked if I should drive her
or call an ambulance based on what happened.
They said to call 911 so the paramedics can check her
out- it's always better to be on the safe side.

Soooo I called 911 and BAM
a police officer was at my door pronto!
It turns out that the first responder is my next-
door-neighbor! How cool is that?!
The policeman was very nice with Sunny
and it was a great distraction for her... I'm sure it was on her
list of to-dos in life to meet a live police officer!

The ambulance came and the medics checked her out.
Her lungs sounded clear and she didn't seem to be in any pain.
All she told them was,
"Earring taste yummy... stuck in there!"
They said that I could take her to the ER to get
an X-Ray to make sure that the earring didn't
become imbedded in any organs.

Sooo I left Dainty with my sistah
and let hubby know what's up.
I got to the ER in great time and check in.
After waiting for 1 hour, Triage checked Sunny out
and said that they would put her in "fast-track"
(I'm still not sure what that is) and asked us to wait in another room.
Sooo another 30 minutes went by and Sunny
was desperate to play with the other children
and begging for a snack and water (which is what she COULDN'T
have given the circumstances).
I though my arms would break off from trying to hold her
still when finally a nurse called us in.

They set Sunny up with a little room and a TV to
keep her busy.
20 minutes later...after I lost precious brain cells to some
cartoon... She was called into X-Ray.
Sunny behaved like an angel during the whole process,
though she insisted that her stuffed puppy get
his "picture taken" also.

We waited again in the little room and lost more
brain cells. About 15 minutes later a doctor
came in and talked to Sunny and then
went to go look at the X-Rays.
15 more minutes...more brain cells gone...
The doctor told Sunny,
"Your earring is taking a bath in your tummy!"
Of course, she was completely confused and said,
"No, earring stuck in there." (pointing to throat)
Apparently she doesn't understand the concept yet
that what goes into your throat goes into your belly.

The doctor told me that I need to look for her to "pass it"
within 3 days or she needs to go back to make sure
it doesn't get poked into her intestines.
Oh JOY.
I brought back the diapers for a few days.
*grimmace*
Mother's are GROSSLY underpaid.

To conclude, yes, the child did pass the earring.
Yes, I did demand a bonus from my employer.
YES
I did get one.

Just because I LOVE boasting about
how wonderful and supportive my husband is
in every way I am going to share with you the
BEAUTIFUL award that was presented to me yesterday.

Dear Michelle:

I am pleased to present you with an Individual Performance Award for demonstrating God’s values in the following manner:

Michelle Tomasello was called upon to take Sunny to the hospital for swallowing an earring. She did so with great joy and charity. Afterwards, Michelle needed to undertake the difficult and messy task of scanning Sunny’s fecal matter for the earring. By doing so, Michelle avoided a return visit to the doctor for a follow-up appointment and x-ray.

Peter Tomasello has nominated you for this award for going above and beyond expected performance by:

This was a clear example of going over and above in your responsibilities as a parent and doing so with joy and charity.

In the spirit of "Respect for People", I urge you to extend your thanks to the individual who nominated you.

Please accept my congratulations. An award of $** will be reflected in an upcoming pay statement. Please note your pay statement will be grossed up for tax purposes so you will receive the entire amount stated above.

As you know, Individual Performance Awards recognize parents such as you - parents who have demonstrated exceptional performance and leader behaviors on a daily basis.

Thank you for your contributions to our family success.

Regards,

Peter

Like I said, BEST HUSBAND EVAH!
I was so touched by this!
Not just because he is giving me an award and bonus,
but because he is using the money he got from his
own bonus at work as an act of love for me.
*tears
~and he's all MINE!~
