"Summer Days Drifting Away..."

Hello All!

I can't help but think of the song, "Summer Nights" from Grease when it comes to this late-summer time of the year. I don't want this beautiful summer heat and fun to end, but I am excited about the approaching fall and holidays. It is amazing how the time flies by from the beginning of school to *BANG!* fall. Just two-and-a-half more weeks until it officially begins!

I always think of "fall" as the time for apple and pumpkin picking, but I finally realized yesterday that every year I always over-shoot the picking season and then wonder why I end up with the measly end-of-harvest crops.  Peter and I sat down yesterday and googled our local farms and we came to the shocking reality that if we didn't go claim our juicy apples now they would be gone within two weeks! SO we decided to buckle into our van and head right over to a lovely farm about 30 minutes away. We are very glad that we did too! The apples were in their juicy prime and there were plenty of varieties to choose from! We also completely enjoyed browsing their quaint shoppe complete with warm bakery goods, fresh veggies, and local diary. Before heading home we made sure to stop by and visit with the pretty chickens (Rhode Island Reds... my favorite!) and sample the cool apple cider and some big moist cookies!

Every year I always make a huge apple pie using our hand-picked fruit, but this year I want to also try making some apple chips and applesauce! If any of you have a favorite recipe that you would like to share, I would love to try it. :)

 *Happy Harvest!*

Oooooo - apples. I love apples. I'm so glad for apple time.

I made apple spice cookies tonight for the boys (the cool air inspired me). No actual apples were involved, but they were yummy. They tasted like fall.
