This recipe is one of our favorites and is pretty easy using a bread maker. Once a loaf is made, it only takes a day or two before it is completely consumed.
Ingredients:
1-1/2 cups of warm water
1 tablespoon of active dry yeast
5 large egg yolks
1-1/8 teaspoons of salt
1/3 cup of vegetable oil
4-1/2 cups of bread flour (regular flour doesn't work as well but will do if you don't have bread flour)
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1/4 cup of honey
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1. Mix yeast into warm water and set aside
2. Place egg yolks, salt, oil, flour, brown sugar, and honey into bread machine
3. Add water and yeast mixture to machine
4. Run dough cycle (ours takes 1-1/2 hours)
5. Preheat oven to 350F
6. Once dough is ready in machine, separate into 3 portions on a floured surface
7. Roll 3 portions into dough ropes and braid
8. Let loaf rise on top of stove for 30 minutes
9. Brush with beaten egg to give it a shiny look
10. Cook in oven for 20-30 minutes. It should have a golden brown appearance when finished. 20 minutes will give you a more doughy loaf (which I prefer). 30 minutes will give it a drier interior.
11. Cool on a wire rack
Picture 1. I let this rise in the breadmaker for 2 hours while we were at church and look what happened.
